Trautman Hill

The high point originally listed for Trumbull County is Trautman Hill. The original topo depicts a small 1280+ contour at the top of the hill. The LiDAR DEM data has a maximum elevation of 1277.2 feet in association with Trautman Hill, and the location of the highest point matches exactly the location of the highest contour from the original topo.

New Area

A new area was found for Trumbull County, located near the Pennsylvania state line about three miles north of Trautman Hill. Coordinates for the new candidate area are 41.4198 N, 80.5236 W.

The original topo maps depict a large contour of 1270+ at this location. The size of the 1270+ contour is actually a little larger than size of the 1270+ contour on Trautman Hill. On the LiDAR DEM, this area has a maximum elevation of 1277.9 feet -- topping out 0.7 feet higher than Trautman Hill. Also, the LiDAR-derived 1276 foot contour is larger with this new area than with the 1276 foot contour on Trautman Hill..

The new area appears reach its highest point in a wooded area behind some houses and farm fields. Aside from potential access issues with the homeowners, there's no obvious reasons why this point would be difficult to visit. Given that it seems quite possible that it is the true county high point, it should certainly be visited by those looking to claim Trumbull County. Trautman Hill remains a candidate and should also be visited.

Note: the coloring schemes I used in generating the DEM images for the two points were different. Looking at the contours themselves provides the best analysis. The horizontal scales used for the two are almost identical, so distances are about the same.
