Wildwood Fire Tower

The areas located near the Wildwood Fire Tower site are located in far northeast Elk County, about 11 miles north-northeast of St. Mary's.

The original topo depicts a large 2360+ foot contour, with a benchmark and elevation of 2376 at the former Wildwood Fire Tower site in the southern portion of the contour. A smaller 2360+ foot contour is located southwest of the Wildwood Fire Tower site.

The LiDAR DEM depicts that the highest elevation here is co-located with the former fire tower, at the southern end of the larger of the original contours. The highest elevation given by the LiDAR data is 2378.8 feet, and appears to be just south of the radio tower now sitting at the top of the hill.

Another rise is depicted at the north end of the larger original contour, with an elevation given of 2375.2 feet. With a difference of 3.6 feet, this area does not appear to be in contention.

The second (southwest) of the original 2360+ foot contours also does not appear to be in contention, as it is only given a maximum elevation of 2371.4 feet.

Boone Mountain

The Boone Mountain site is located about 4.5 miles northwest of Penfield.

The original topo depicts this area as a liner, with a 2360+ foot contour crossing into Elk County (west) but mainly located in Clearfield County (east). A benchmark elevation of 2369 feet is located right along the county line.

The LiDAR DEM provides a maximum elevation within Elk County of 2370.7 feet. Boone Mountain reaches its summit of 2379.3 feet in Clearfield County.

Since the area within Elk County is about eight feet lower than the Wildwood Fire Tower site, this area is almost assuredly not the highest point in Elk county. However, if the county line had been drawn just two tenths of a mile to the east, this would likely be the high point.

Southwest of Boone Mountain

These two areas are located one mile to the southwest of the original Boone Mountain point listed above. These areas are not along the county line.

The original topo depicts two 2360+ foot contours in this area. The LiDAR DEM matches up very well. The nearby 2331 spot elevation is accurately depicted on the LiDAR DEM, as are the areas above 2360+ feet. The area to the west has a maximum elevation of 2371.6 feet, and the area to the east has a maximum elevation of 2373.9 feet.

These two areas are also lower than the Wildwood Fire Tower site by 7.2 and 4.9 feet, respectively. Thus, it appears that the Wildwood Fire Tower site is the highest in Elk County.
