Cuyahoga County High Point Trip Report
1 area on route 176, 1/3 mile north of Interstate 80 (1280+ ft.)
Date: September 21, 2009
Author: Andy Hatzos
I completed this high point immediately after visiting the highest points in Medina and Summit Counties. All three are within a few miles of each other.
I drove in from the south, crossing Interstate 80 on State Route 176 (Broadview Road). I turned right at the intersection with Valley Parkway Drive, and parked next to a sign advertising the Seneca Golf Course.
I walked south along the east side of Broadview Road, looking for a place to cross through the thick brush and onto the golf course. I found no clear openings, so I pushed through, and ended up on the left side of a fairway. There is not much relief on the golf course, but there are a few areas of high ground between the thick trees and the fairway and green. There were a couple of bumps near the green and bunkers, but they were obviously artificial.
On my way out of the golf course, I found a very clear opening in the trees to the northwest of the green, very near my parking space at the Seneca Golf Course sign. Future highpointers will definitely want to enter the golf course from this northwest corner, rather than making a difficult bushwhack in plain view of the road.
I then walked back to Broadview Road, and crossed to the west side of the road. I investigated a high area near the sixth house from the north -- house 9790. I found no one home, so I quickly walked up to the front porch and then around to the north side of the house. I also felt that a couple of areas along the eastern edge of the road seemed to raise a bit above the nearby ground -- especially one near a blue fire hydrant.
With the thick trees blocking the view of the golf course from the road, it is difficult to say which of the areas is highest. I completed all of my areas of interest in under 15 minutes, so it is of little difficulty to visit them all.
The traffic is heavy on Broadview Road, and there is no sidewalk on the eastern side (near the golf course).
